BAN THE "#ORBEEZCHALLENGE" and "#POPOUTCHALLENGE" from TIKTOK

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES?

The article, "What is the Orbeez challenge? Dangerous TikTok trend explained as police issue warning" Says it best,

"The Orbeez Challenge on TikTok has left law enforcement warning communities of the potential danger of the viral trend. This comes after police officers received reports of teenagers shooting gel beads at each other. Some people who have taken part in the trend have been arrested.

Orbeez balls are self-absorbent polymer beads that grow larger than their original volume when soaked in water ... TikTok’s Orbeez Challenge included people shooting balls with toy guns at strangers and recording the victim’s reactions simultaneously. TikTokers taking part in the trend can be seen laughing at the strangers who get hurt by the Orbeez balls" says Karishma Rao.

WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?

The problem at hand is that kids watching TikTok are seeing this trend, thinking it's funny, and go out and do it themselves and end up hurting people and causing dangerous situations.

Article, "‘Orbeez Challenge’ on TikTok Leads to Battery Charges and Police Warnings" Explains,

"Over in Peachtree City, Georgia, a child on a bike was shot by balls and left with a bloody face after teens modified the balls to be more dangerous, per authorities. The Peachtree City Police Department says it is pressing charges against people firing at others, and that these actions “could result in felony charges and parents could also be liable for the actions of their kids.” says Brenton Blanchet.

And this Fox 13 News video, "Ogden teenager hit in eye in likely TikTok challenge" Explains the extreme danger of this TikTok trend where a young girl walking to school with her friend in Ogden UT, got shot by the orbeez bullets from the "#popoutchallenge" where you drive by and shoot random people, and she got hit in the eye and has caused possible permanent eye damage.

Many other people across the US have been affected and hurt by this trend as well.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP MAKE A CHANGE TO THIS PROBLEM?

The first step you can take is, EDUCATE YOUR KIDS, help them understand the difference between safe humor and unsafe humor. This trend may be humorous to them but is not safe. Also, help them understand why this can be dangerous, even without someone being hurt. It could cause accidents, start scares of people thinking it's a real gun, and more.

The second step is to GET TIKTOK TO BAN ANYONE WHO PERFORMS THIS TREND ON TIKTOK. I truly believe if we rally enough support we can show TikTok that this is a problem they need to take care of by banning videos and people, or whatever means necessary they need to take to stop it from happening anymore.

WHY I CHOSE TO STAND UP AGAINST THIS

Just today I became a victim, among others, of this harmful TikTok trend. I was biking in Syracuse UT, trying to better myself and work on my health when these teens started laughing at me and I was concerned, as I have been diagnosed with strong anxiety, but I was about to get on my bike when they started shooting at me with, I believe to be an "Orbeez Gun" because there was no bullets leftover and it made the same noise that they make.

This is very frustrating for many reasons. Reasons being that, I felt violated, (causing a panic attack), I could have crashed my bike, and that they were hitting cars, as well as the driver, was shooting me with his eyes off the road, causing danger to others driving next to them. These two teenage boys seemed to have taken inspiration from the TikTok trend, laughing and flipping me off as they go on their merry way after me calling them out on their crap.

I called 911 and reported them because of the dangers that could cause to others and myself, and I didn't realize at the moment that calling them out would cause this, but during my call with the dispatcher, they came back from another direction and started shooting me again.

Luckily, I was not injured, but I was bruised in a mental way, because of the violated feeling, and the anxiety they caused for me. I am glad that I wasn't hurt like the people mentioned in the articles above.

This happening led to me posting on a Syracuse Citizens Facebook page to spread awareness of these reckless teens. I did it so others can watch out and not be harmed by being in the wrong place, wrong time like I was. This post had countless people reaching out to show support against this issue, and in doing so we learned what car they were driving and reported it to the police. I also wasn't the only one as a victim of them.

As well as shooting at me, they also shot a little girl who was scootering with her family just down the road from me, she got shot in the back leaving a hard and painful welt, according to her parents who made a post as well.

We also heard of others that were affected by these teens earlier in the day and after the teens shot me they went down to the local skatepark and chased down some kids with their orbeez guns, according to their parents on Facebook, who were furious with the teens.

More updates on this situation will be posted as the SYRACUSE PD takes further action.
