Most people probably believe that purchasing and consuming eggs is pretty harmless. After all, taking unfertilised eggs from a chicken doesn't hurt them, does it? Sadly, this couldn't be further from the truth.

In the egg industry, there is no use for male chicks. They don't lay eggs, and they're not the right breed to be grown quickly enough for meat production. They are therefore considered worthless and are killed on mass by gassing or maceration (being ground up alive).

This happens to around 29 million male chicks in the UK each year.

Fortunately, this isn't necessary as modern science allows for selective breeding of chickens. Other countries such as France and Germany have already banned mass chick culling and the UK should do the same.
