Ban the Killing of Animals Without Stun in the UK
Ban the Killing of Animals Without Stun in the UK
The Issue
Having personally grossed out with the distressing fact that animals are subject to inhumane practices in the meat industry, I feel an intimate sense of responsibility to stop such cruelty. It is disheartening and heartbreaking that the creatures go through tremendous suffering before they lose consciousness.
In the United Kingdom, non-stunned slaughter is permissible under specific circumstances, notably religious beliefs. However, this exception undermines the essential welfare standards that should defend all animals equally.
According to the Farm Animal Welfare Council - an independent advisory body, slaying animals without stunning induces "significant pain and distress." It further states, 88% of animals in the UK are stunned before slaughter. Yet, this leaves a considerable number of animals, approximately 2.6 million, subjected to this practice (FAWC, 2009).
We call upon the UK Government to amend the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015 and ensure no animal is subjected to slaughter without prior stunning. This is about universal animal rights and the end of inhumane practices. Influenced by my personal connection and the sheer discomfort faced by the animals, I urge you to sign this petition for a law enforcing mandatory stunning before the slaughter of any animal in the UK.
