I am a cat owner in Malaysia. I cherish my feline companion and the idea of depriving it of its natural defenses and enjoyment of simple things, like 'making biscuits,' is unthinkable. Sadly, there are many who don't share these sentiments. Cat declawing - an invasive procedure involving the amputation of a cat’s toes up to the first knuckle - is still legal in our country. This happens despite the evidence of the physical and psychological trauma it causes in cats. The Humane Society has noted that in many instances, declawed cats have become more aggressive or prone to biting as a response to their vulnerability. We have a responsibility to protect our pets from such unnecessary harm. I ask that you stand with me in urging our legislators to outlaw this cruel practice. It's time for Malaysia to join the near 40 countries, including much of Europe and parts of North America, where this practice is already banned. Let's protect our cats; they depend on us.
