The Issue

I am personally moved to instigate this petition based on harrowing scenes that still haunt me, observed on the streets of Memphis. Several years ago, a horse died on the Main Street mall, a painful image impossible to erase from my memory. The continuing practice of forcing these distinguished creatures to trudge through scorching summer heat in our city is gruesome and unacceptable. The extreme temperatures in Memphis, often reaching above 90°F, are detrimental to the health and endurance of these working horses. According to the Humane Society, extended exposure to such extreme temperatures can result in heatstroke for these animals, leading to irreversible damage or even death.

These magnificent animals deserve so much more than a life of servitude, suffering, and cruelty. It is time we put a stop to this ruthless practice and give horses in Memphis the dignified existence they deserve. We can find alternative, humane ways of retaining charm and tradition in our city without sacrificing the welfare of these incredible beings. We call upon local legislation to enact a complete ban on the use of horse-drawn carriages on the streets of Memphis. Prove we are a city that values the welfare of all our inhabitants, both two-legged and four. Please sign this petition to protect the horses and foster a more compassionate Memphis.

Other cities that have already banned this cruel practice include, Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Biloxi, Camden, Montreal, Prague and several Florida cities. NYC has it currently in legislation.
