The Issue

I am a passionate protector and advocate for animal welfare. I deeply believe that we humans do not have the right to confine birds or any animal just for our company or pleasure.
The other day, I had gone to a pet store to purchase cat food. Then I asked where the cat litter was and they guided me to the basement where I was in complete shock and completely heartbroken! I see a dozen cages with countless birds all squeezed together chirping like crazy. Then I see a little parrot in a cage; he was for sale but nobody wanted him; you see, he was depressed and had nearly lost all his feathers.

What we perceive as their songs could be cries for help we fail to understand. Greece, my precious home, is experiencing an alarming decrease in bird diversity due to the relentless capturing of birds for trade. Our skies are becoming increasingly empty due to such uncontrolled and cruel practices. Tragically, many of these captured birds die either during the capture process or later in captivity.

Greece is in the Mediterranean, which is a meeting point for various migratory birds, home to approximately 500 recorded bird species. Each year, as reported by BirdLife International, millions of birds travel through Greece and many become victims of illegal trapping. These numbers reveal a harrowing reality of biodiversity loss, with repercussions extending beyond mere loss of bird-song.

I urge the Greek Government to implement strong laws making the sale of caged birds illegal and increase efforts for their protection. Our wildlife needs us now more than ever. Only through our collective action can we bring about change, ensuring not only bird diversity, but also the health of our environment and future generations. Help protect our feathered friends, their freedom and their right to the skies. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard against the capture and sale of caged birds in Greece.
