Living under a neighbour who uses a surround sound system inconsiderately has turned my home into a place of distress. For months now, the constant rumbling and blaring from my neighbour’s video games and television seeps through my ceiling, unsettling my pets and disturbing my peace. I am now forced to rely on headphones just to enjoy my own TV shows. The mental strain is real—I barely settled into my flat for four months before the noise made me wish to move.

This is a reality for many residents in shared living spaces such as flats and tenements. While surround sound systems can enhance personal entertainment experiences, they often infringe upon the rights of others to enjoy their homes peacefully. According to the World Health Organization, excessive noise can lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety, and disrupt sleep and daily activities.

Many tenants like me have voiced their grievances yet have received no lasting relief. The noise regulations currently in place are either too lenient or inadequately enforced, allowing noise pollution to persist unabated. As a community, we must prioritize the well-being and comfort of all residents over the desires of a few.

By banning the use of surround sound systems in shared living spaces, we can ensure a harmonious environment where everyone can enjoy their homes without unwanted disturbance. This is not about taking away enjoyment, but about respecting each resident’s right to a peaceful living environment.
