Stefanie Taylor started this petition to Swarthmore Borough Council

Hello! Our names are Maya D. and Charlotte T. We attend the 5th grade at the Swarthmore-Rutledge School. We are trying to ban styrofoam ( non-extruded polystyrene foam ) from Swarthmore. We would like you to help us fix this terrible problem by signing our petition to the Swarthmore Borough Council and our school district.

Many places in Swarthmore use styrofoam. It's even used at our school. In the lunch room, all of our lunch trays are made of styrofoam. Just think about that; hundreds of kids buying lunch every day, each using trays made of this terrible substance. This is one of the main reasons we were motivated to start this project.

Did you know that styrofoam doesn't biodegrade for hundreds of years? How about that this material isn't even recyclable. Recycling trucks pick up paper, plastics and aluminum, but they won't recycle styrofoam.

There are many reasons to ban styrofoam from our town, and it is easy for town businesses to find replacements for styrofoam. They can wrap foods and other things in paper or another recyclable product.  In our opinion, reusable products are much better for the environment than styrofoam.

A new law will give Swarthmore businesses time to prepare for the change. The time has come to ban styrofoam from Swarthmore. If you agree, please add your signature below!
