Ban Styrofoam in Our Local School Cafeterias

The Issue

Local schools in our town are still using Styrofoam materials in cafeterias, which is highly detrimental to our environment. Styrofoam is non-biodegradable, essentially meaning it never breaks down or decomposes, thus causing long-lasting environmental harm. Increasingly, research is showing the harmful effects of Styrofoam on our planet, with the United States Environmental Protection Agency identifying this material as the fifth largest source of hazardous waste. Moreover, our town does not have an effective method for recycling styrofoam, resulting in the majority of it being discarded into landfills.

There exist eco-friendly alternatives that can be adapted by school cafeterias, such as biodegradable or compostable plates, cups, and trays. Transitioning to these alternatives will improve the environmental sustainability practices of our schools and will help promote consciousness about the crucial necessity of environmental stewardship among our students.

Therefore, we urgently call upon our local school district to transition away from the harmful usage of Styrofoam in our school cafeterias. Show your support for a cleaner, healthier future for our students and our planet by signing this petition.
