The Issue

Every year, during festive seasons like Diwali, neighborhoods across India are flooded with the ear-piercing sounds of fireworks. These are not just side effects of celebration—they are a source of severe noise pollution that affects our environment and inflicts trauma on domestic animals such as cats and dogs.

I remember vividly how my pet dog, Lyla, would tremble and cower under furniture, his body shaking with fear, during fireworks displays on festival nights. It was heartbreaking to see him in such distress, and he was not alone in this. Animals can't comprehend the loud booms and cracks of fireworks; they only feel the terrorizing impact it has on their highly sensitive hearing.

In addition to the visible panic in pets, studies have shown that the sudden and unexpected loud noises from these fireworks can lead to anxiety disorders in animals, long-term behavioral changes, and, in some cases, even physical harm from attempting to flee in panic. According to a report by the Indian Council of Medical Research, the noise levels during Diwali often surpass the prescribed 75 dB in residential areas, with some reports reaching levels over 125 dB.

Many countries worldwide have recognized this issue and have already implemented bans on sound-producing fireworks to protect animals and reduce noise pollution. It's time for India to follow suit by regulating or outright banning such fireworks nationwide, especially in residential areas.

The solution is simple: promote the use of silent fireworks that produce stunning visual displays without the traumatic noise. Various manufacturers have developed alternatives like silent or low-noise fireworks that are much more considerate of sensitive ears.

By choosing environmentally friendly and animal-safe alternatives, we can enjoy our celebrations without inflicting terror on our beloved pets. Not only will this be a more peaceful solution for animal lovers, but it will also contribute to our long-term efforts to mitigate noise pollution and its negative impacts on human health.

Let us implore our governmental bodies and local authorities to take decisive action against the sale and use of sound-producing fireworks. Sign this petition to urge them to protect our pets and neighbors from unnecessary noise-related trauma. Together, we can bring about a significant change for the betterment of our communities.
