Ban Social Media for Under 16s in New Zealand

Ban Social Media for Under 16s in New Zealand
The issue
Too often, young people say or do things online without thinking, which can lead to unintended and potentially devastating consequences. As a community member, it breaks my heart to witness how these careless actions can ruin individual lives, and it's time we take action to protect our community.
Social media is a vast and unregulated world where young minds are exposed to cyberbullying, unrealistic standards, and harmful content. These online platforms have become breeding grounds for mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, especially among those under 16. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, adolescents who use social media excessively are at greater risk of developing these mental health problems.
Moreover, children often lack the maturity and understanding needed to navigate these complex digital landscapes safely. In many cases, they become victims of online predators or engage in dangerous behaviors like sharing personal information, which puts them at risk.
In response to these concerns, we urge the New Zealand government to implement a ban on social media for individuals under the age of 16. This initiative should include strong measures to verify age before granting access to social media platforms. By doing so, we can create a safer environment for our children to grow and develop without the harmful effects of social media.
Protecting them from the pitfalls of social media is a significant step in the right direction. I ask for your support in signing this petition to urge lawmakers to consider the best interests of our children and take immediate action.
Please join me in this vital cause and together, let's make a difference in our community lives by advocating for a healthier, safer environment. Sign the petition and be a part of this change for good.
