Ban smoking near disability permit parking in Adelaide

Ban smoking near disability permit parking in Adelaide

The issue

My mum has faced many health issues including non hodgkin's lymphoma (cancer) and extensive lung damage. She uses the designated disability permit parking. More than half of the times we have parked in disability parking, we have both been exposed to smoke from nearby smokers. Unfortunately, there are chairs directly in front of the disability parking which people think is a welcome to light one up. This isn't just for my mum, but for other permit parkers with similar health conditions facing risks each day due to the unavoidable exposure to second hand smoke.

It's nothing new, nicotine products produce harmful smoke that is especially dangerous to those with pre-existing health conditions. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), secondhand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, hundreds which are toxic and around 70 that are cancer causing.

For the safety of those who need it most, we are calling for a ban on smoking and vaping within 10 metres of disability permit parking spots in Adelaide. This ban will protect the health of those who need it and promote a more inclusive and respectful environment for everyone.

Implementing this ban is a practical first step in reducing the health hazards people such as my mum and many others face daily. I urge the local council to recognise the importance of this measure by incorporating it into local legislation.

I'm asking you to please sign this petition to help create a safer, healthier environment for all Adelaide citizens, particularly those who are most at risk. Together we can create change that protects the lives of our vulnerable community members.
