The Issue

Growing up in my home, one of the constants in my life has been stepping outside only to find my path littered with pieces of trash. Whether on a simple walk with my dog or during a relaxing bike ride through the neighbourhood, discarded plastics intrude upon the landscape everywhere I go. The worst part? These are materials that don't biodegrade, destined to sit indefinitely on this planet or, worse yet, to end up polluting our waters.

Single-use plastics—from disposable water bottles to plastic grocery bags—are a significant contributor to the waste crisis. According to a report by the United Nations, we produce about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, and half of this is single-use plastic. These items are typically used for just a few minutes but can persist in the environment for over 400 years.

The impact goes beyond unsightly landscapes; it's jeopardizing wildlife, especially marine creatures who mistake plastic for food. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has reported that if we continue on the current path, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.

We cannot afford the ongoing environmental and ecological damage. Many other regions and countries around the world have successfully implemented bans or restrictions on single-use plastics, demonstrating that change is possible with the right policies. For instance, the European Union has enacted stringent measures banning several kinds of single-use plastics, leading to reductions in plastic pollution and a push towards sustainable alternatives.

To make a real impact, we must urge our local leaders and governments to act decisively. Implementing a ban on single-use plastics and encouraging the development and use of biodegradable alternatives can significantly reduce pollution and protect our natural world for future generations.

Join me in calling for a ban on single-use plastics in our community. Together, we can enact meaningful change and ensure a healthier and cleaner environment for everyone and all living creatures. Please sign this petition to take a stand against plastic pollution and advocate for a sustainable future.
