Ban Sighthound Racing

Ban Sighthound Racing
The Issue
This is Belle - she is a whippet/lurcher, who has opened our eyes to the historic and ongoing neglect and abuse the sighthound family endure.
Greyhound racing was deemed “well-regulated” and of significant contribution to the economy according to Parliament in October 2025. Parliament also recognised the supposed jobs it guarantees across Great Britain, what with greyhound racing being the sixth most popular sport in terms of viewership.
Attempts to ban greyhound racing is typically worn down to the simple, rather superficial facts: Parliament states greyhound racing in England is already safeguarded by the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Welfare of Racing Greyhounds Regulations 2010. Parliament, in other words, chooses to dismiss the case or “wipe their hands” of the matter.
The reality of greyhound racing, and its horrific repercussions, goes unnoticed. Times are progressing fortunately, with New Zealand banning the sport, and Wales eagerly in the lead to do what is right.
Here are the hard facts of greyhound racing:
Between 2018 and 2023, over 2700 greyhounds died and over 26,500 injuries were recorded in the UK alone. These kind, gentle dogs are overbred, doped, and are forced into inhumane living conditions.
Parliament may turn the other way, however there is a systematic cruelty to the greyhound family with dogs suffering broken legs from the sport, spinal injuries and inevitably death. These dogs are considered “wastage” once they have passed their “expiry date” in the racing world. They are intoxicated with performance enhancement drugs without given the offer of saying “no thanks”, and it is true that live baiting remains very real so long as greyhound racing is considered a “well regulated” sport.
There is absolutely no need for this sport to continue. The implications of the term “sport” denies its cruel, abusive and greedy environment, given it the medal of competitiveness and community.
The Sighthound breed love to run. And when they run, it is HAPPY running. Bolting from east to west to north. A happy face with a big grin and legs too fast for any human to compete against. They are also people, who love cuddles, a lot of sleep, their blankets and their mums and dads to love them without any ifs or buts. Their joy for life is worth more than what’s left in the dust of a racing court.
We know we are not the only ones who love our greyhounds/lurchers/whippets. We know we’re not the only ones who have witnessed this amazing family of hounds struggle, and yet teach us so much humility and kindness.
We have made this petition because every petition we have found has been closed or dismissed by Parliament
It’s about time the UK took that step forward, and ban the sport now, forever. Let the Sighthound family run and be happy to run.
