Ban short term rentals in Cedar Rapids residential neighborhoods

The Issue

Short term rentals in our residential  neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa are causing significant disruptions to the lives of residents. These properties, often rented out through platforms like Airbnb and VRBO, bring a slew of problems that affect the entire community. As a resident suffering from these issues, I've witnessed firsthand the disruptions these rentals cause on a daily basis.

One of the major concerns is the lack of parking. Every weekend, these properties are filled with transient guests, often exceeding the parking facilities available. Neighbors find themselves parking blocks away from their own homes, which is inconvenient and frustrating. The constant flow of unfamiliar vehicles also raises safety concerns, especially in family-friendly areas.

Additionally, the upkeep of these properties is often neglected. Property owners primarily focused on profit rather than community welfare allow their houses to fall into disrepair. This neglect not only affects the aesthetic appeal of our neighborhoods but also poses safety threats. The lack of proper maintenance leads to deteriorating buildings which can attract pests and further degrade the quality of life in our community.

Noise pollution is another persistent issue, largely due to frequent parties held at these rentals. What used to be peaceful evenings are now disrupted by loud music and disturbances late into the night. These activities not only disrupt our sleep but also affect the tranquility and harmony we all cherish in our community.

These issues collectively contribute to the depreciating value of the homes around them. Families who have lived here for generations are facing decreased property values due to the chaos and instability brought in by these transient rental properties. This not only affects current homeowners but also discourages prospective buyers, further destabilizing our neighborhoods.

It is time for the local government in Cedar Rapids to step in and address this growing concern. Implementing a ban on short term rentals in residential neighborhoods will help restore peace, safety, and stability to our communities. Many cities across the country are implementing similar measures to protect their residents and maintain the character of their neighborhoods.

I urge you to think about the families, the safety, and the community spirit in Cedar Rapids. Sign this petition to call on our local government to enact a ban on short term rentals in our neighborhoods. By coming together, we can preserve the integrity and serenity of our beloved community.
