Ban Sharia law in Australia
The issue
As a survivor of domestic violence, a mother of a female child, and with several gay family members, I am deeply concerned about the potential introduction or influence of Sharia law within Australia. Sharia law has been known, in varying interpretations around the world, to allow or even defend actions that are fundamentally opposed to Australia’s core principles of equality, justice, and freedom. It defends practices of domestic and sexual violence against women and children, and commands that LGBTQ+ individuals and others who do not adhere to its religious beliefs may face severe persecution, including death. Sharia law also infringes on laws allowing Australians freedom to worship a religion of their own choosing (or none), which will change the Australian culture to such a degree that it will be unrecognisable.
Australia prides itself on being a country of diverse cultures and faiths, yet it is fundamentally built on the foundation of respect for human rights and equality for all under the law. Allowing any foreign law, such as Sharia law, to permeate either our public or private spheres risks undermining our national values and legal systems. It stands in stark contrast to our national laws, which work tirelessly to uphold the rights of women, protect children, and promote inclusivity within our communities.
Sharia law, being known for its strict and often harsh decrees, presents a direct threat to almost all sectors of Australian society, particularly women, children, sex-workers, all religious groups other than Islamics, and the LGBTQ+ community. Its enforcement would lead to a dual legal system, something that Australia can not afford. Such a system would create confusion and violence, potentially leading to a society divided by contrasting ideologies across public and private spaces, with an inability to prosecute crimes against humanity in Australia.
We petition the High Court of Australia to take definitive action against any acceptance or recognition of Sharia law in our nation. We ask for a clear and unambiguous stand that enforces Australian federal and state laws above any religious or foreign laws. It is crucial to ensure that Australian laws remain the only governing authority and that any practice contrary to them, especially those infringing on personal freedom and human rights, be rigorously prohibited.
Your signature on this petition is not only a stand for solidarity with survivors of violence and marginalised communities but a stand to preserve the legal and ethical standards that define us as Australians. Please sign this petition to urge the High Court of Australia to ban Sharia law in any form within our nation’s borders, ensuring that our laws, values, and principles continue to serve and protect all Australians equally.
