The Issue

25/1/26 On a quiet Sunday afternoon, a vibrant 16-year-old girl lost her life crossing the streets of Dublin. Her future was filled with dreams and endless possibilities, but it was suddenly cut short. This tragic accident was caused by a scrambler, a type of off-road motorcycle that, like e-scooters, has become an increasingly common and dangerous presence on our streets.

In Dublin, scramblers and e-scooters present significant safety hazards to both riders and pedestrians. Vehicle-related accidents involving scramblers and e-scooters have surged over the past few years. Dublin City Council data shows an alarming 25% increase in such incidents since last year alone. These vehicles are often operated by individuals who are unlicensed, inconsiderate and inexperienced, making them unpredictable and risky in busy environments.

Despite existing regulations, the enforcement is lax and often ignored, thereby encouraging reckless behaviour without fear of consequence. Many of these scramblers are unmuffled, contributing not only to noise pollution but also intimidating pedestrians, particularly in residential areas and parks where families and children should feel at ease.

The proliferation of these vehicles has reached a point where urgent action is necessary. We propose the Dublin City Council enact a strict ban on the use of scramblers and e-scooters within the city limits. Alongside this, increased policing and heavier penalties for violations could deter their illegal use and ensure the safety of all who share our roads.

This tragedy highlights a critical vulnerability in our public safety infrastructure. We must act now to prevent further loss of life. Imagine a city where every individual can walk the streets without fear, where our children are safe as they play and commute, and where the urban environment is not tainted by the illegal and dangerous use of scramblers and e-scooters.

Sign this petition to demand Dublin City Council take decisive action. By uniting our voices, we can create a safer community for everyone. Together, let’s make Dublin a city where such preventable tragedies become a thing of the past.
