The Issue

I am not a cosplayer but I am lover of all things related to fantasy, creativity, anime and self-expression. However, I am deeply concerned and hurt by the increasing incidents of racism directed towards Black individuals sharing their cosplay work on social media. Every time a Black cosplayer posts a video or photo online, they risk receiving hateful, racist remarks and unwarranted criticism, simply because of their skin color. This is unacceptable and it needs to stop now.

Cosplay is about celebrating characters and stories from diverse worlds. It is a form of art that allows individuals to connect, express their creativity, and find joy in embodying their favorite characters. Racism has no place in this community. Unfortunately, many Black cosplayers face discrimination, exclusion, and harmful stereotypes when they should be celebrated for their talent and dedication to the craft.

Statistics show that racial discrimination in various online communities is rising, with incidents frequently going unaddressed by platform administrators. A report by the Pew Research Center highlights that approximately 64% of Black adults have faced online harassment, with racial harassment being a significant concern on social media platforms.

This movement became way too extreme on the media that one of the black cosplayers named Ashley or username Squidkid1111 took their own life due to these racists threats.

We call on social media platforms to take a strong stand against racism in cosplay by implementing more robust policies and practices that protect Black creators. This can include moderating content more effectively, providing clearer reporting mechanisms, and implementing swift consequences for those spreading hate. Additionally, transparency in the enforcement of these measures is crucial to rebuilding trust within the community.

Please join me in urging these platforms to ban racism in the cosplay community and support a safe and inclusive space for every creator to express themselves freely. Sign this petition today and help us make a meaningful change.

The cosplay community is toxic and we need to make a big difference.
