PETITION TO RECONSIDER THE ADELAIDE RALLY ROUTES THROUGH MONTACUTE AND CORKSCREW ROADS

For 30 years, residents of Montacute and Corkscrew roads have endured the disruption, risks and loss of peace associated with the Adelaide Rally. For three decades, concerns have been raised, yet residents continue to face the prospect of having their daily lives disrupted in their own neighbourhoods.

Enough is enough. Our community should not be expected to repeatedly sacrifice its safety, freedom of movement and quality of life for a motorsport event.

Montacute and Corkscrew roads are residential roads, not purpose-built racetracks. Behind every driveway is a home, a family, a worker, a child or a vulnerable person whose daily life does not stop for a race. Residents need to get to work, children need to get home from school, families need to attend appointments, emergency services need unrestricted access, and local wildlife needs to cross these roads safely.

The consequences of road closures and racing activities extend far beyond the event itself. Restricted access can mean missed appointments, disrupted employment, distressed families, delayed medical assistance and residents feeling trapped or disconnected from their own community. These are not minor inconveniences to be dismissed; they are serious concerns that demand proper consideration.

OUR CONCERNS

Children’s Safe Return from School:Road closures that prevent children from getting home after the 3:00 pm school finish, disrupting school transport and leaving families facing uncertainty about their children’s safe return.

Children’s Saturday Sport: Families potentially unable to reach sporting activities, creating unnecessary stress, missed commitments and disruption to children’s participation in sport.

Protection of Heritage Buildings: Serious concerns about potential damage to heritage buildings and historically significant properties that cannot simply be replaced if damaged.

Restriction of Everyday Freedom: Residents facing significant barriers to accessing work, school, university, TAFE, medical appointments, essential services and shops.

Access to Family During Emergencies:
The distressing prospect of being unable to reach a family member who is unwell, vulnerable or in urgent need of help when road access is restricted.

Threats to Local Industry and Livelihoods: Disruption to fruit pickers and other workers who depend on reliable road access, with potential consequences for productivity, local businesses and the wider regional economy.

Childcare and Breastfeeding Families: Parents facing difficulties collecting and dropping off children, with particularly serious consequences for breastfeeding infants who will not accept bottles and depend on timely access to their parents. With the inability to keep their child home from day care to meet these needs.

Labour, Childbirth and Midwifery Access: Concerns that midwives may be delayed or prevented from reaching patients, including women in labour who need timely maternity care. Access to essential healthcare must not be compromised by event-related road restrictions.

Emergency Service Delays: The risk that road closures and congestion could delay ambulances, fire services and other emergency responders. When lives are at stake, every minute matters, and emergency access must be properly protected.

Koala and Wildlife Safety: The risk of wildlife being injured or killed by increased traffic and racing activity. Koalas and other animals regularly cross local roads, and their safety and habitats must not be overlooked when deciding where an event should take place.

Homes, Vehicles and Personal Property: Residents’ ongoing concerns about accidents involving their homes, vehicles and other belongings, with the potential for serious damage, financial hardship and lasting distress.

Noise and Mental Wellbeing:
The loss of peace within residential neighbourhoods due to racing noise, traffic and disruption, affecting residents’ comfort, wellbeing and ability to enjoy their own homes.

Pedestrian and Community Safety:
The potential risks to children, pedestrians, cyclists, older residents and people with disabilities navigating roads affected by competitive racing, traffic changes and event infrastructure.

The concerns are obviously never ending.

OUR DEMAND
We call on the relevant authorities and Adelaide Rally organisers to reconsider the use of Montacute and Corkscrew roads for the Adelaide Rally and properly investigate safer alternative routes.

We demand meaningful consultation with affected residents, transparent assessment of the risks, and clear consideration of the impacts on public safety, emergency access, family life, local livelihoods, heritage properties and wildlife.

After 30 years, residents should not have to keep repeating the same concerns while facing the possibility of further disruption. The longevity of an event does not make its impacts acceptable, nor should community concerns be dismissed simply because the event has been running for decades.

Our homes are not racetracks. Our families are not collateral inconvenience. Our wildlife should not be an afterthought. And our right to live safely and access our community deserves to be taken seriously.

We are not asking for our concerns to be acknowledged and forgotten. We are asking for genuine action, accountability and a responsible reconsideration of these routes.

Sign this petition to stand with the residents of Montacute and Corkscrew roads. After 30 years, it is time for our community to be heard, our concerns to be addressed and our safety, livelihoods and quality of life to be given the consideration they deserve.
