Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. Dogs are often kept in small, cramped cages for their entire lives and receive little to no medical attention. The breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the sun or breathe fresh air. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there could be as many as 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S., and fewer than 3,000 of these are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The horrifying conditions and the immense cruelty these dogs suffer is unthinkable. It is time that we, as a society, stand up against these inhumane practices.
