The Issue

As a resident of Weston, Florida, every day I see the devastating effects of our plastic consumption on our beautiful local ecosystems. The worst offenders? Plastic straws. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has reported that wildlife, including our precious Florida sea turtles, ingest and choke on plastic debris with straws being a major contributor. Every small action matters in preserving our planet, so let's start by banning plastic straws in Weston by 2026.

These single-use items have a lifespan of a couple of hours yet take over 200 years to decompose, causing irreversible harm to both marine and land animals. As residents of a state with such diverse and beautiful environmental assets, we have an especially strong responsibility to protect these ecosystems. But also, as individuals, we have the power to provide a solution.

By switching to sustainable alternatives like bamboo straws, we can provide a substantial cut in pollution while still meeting our needs. Smaller cities in Florida, like Coral Gables and Saint Petersburg, have implemented similar bans, showing us a practical and achievable path forward.

Let’s come together to protect our wildlife and preserve our wonderful Weston, demonstrating that we truly cherish our uniquely Floridian environment. The well-being of our ecosystem is a shared responsibility. Please, join me in making a change. Sign this petition to ban plastic straws in Weston by 2026 and move toward a sustainable future.
