Ban Plastic in India

The Issue

"Don’t let the plastic bottle be our history’s fossil." – The Dharma Trails

Plastic is everywhere.

It is so strange that the medium which we follow to express our views about plastic also involves the use of plastic. The pen itself is made of plastic. The day starts with plastic. For instance, soap dispensers and shampoo bottles come in plastic bottles and plastic containers. The moment you open the fridge, everything inside is plastic.

Can the plastic we use be recycled?

Plastic bags, plastic film and wrap, plant pots and buckets are no longer acceptable due to changing markets. Each community may be a little different in what they recycle because of different processors and markets.

How plastic affects us, you ask?

For a moment stop thinking about yourself. How it affects us is not really important. Think about marine life. How they are suffering. How difficult it is for them to live. Think about it for once. I once thought when a mother of a fish goes to get food and never comes back it dies, it is because you threw plastic in the ocean. Put yourself in this position and think about what you would feel if your mother goes to get food and never returns. Isn’t it terrifying? Fishes and all the other animals living in the ocean are dying because of your carelessness.

Now, how to get rid of this plastic?

There has been lots of research in this field and there are lots of substitutes for plastic which are likely to come in the near future, which will replace the use of plastic. Until that time, we should try and replace plastic with paper, jute and glass wherever possible. This is not a warning for the future but a threat! Saying no to plastic is a threat, not a slogan. Plastic use has to stop!
