Ban peanuts on all airlines globally
The Issue
My son has developed a severe peanut allergy that requires him to carry an epinephrine auto-injector at all times. While this is a manageable condition on most days, it becomes a serious concern when flying. Airborne peanut particles can trigger allergic reactions, creating a life-threatening situation for him and many others with similar allergies.
We've had positive experiences with airlines like Jet2, TUI, and Ryanair, who make announcements asking passengers to refrain from eating peanuts. Their cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated. However, our recent experience with KLM and Air France was concerning. These airlines refused to make any announcements to restrict peanut consumption on board, leaving my son vulnerable and anxious throughout the flight.
Peanut allergies are increasing worldwide, with approximately 2% of the population affected. According to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the prevalence of peanut allergies has tripled in recent years. Ensuring the safety and health of all passengers should be a top priority for airlines. No family should live in fear for their loved ones’ safety simply because they choose to fly.
Banning peanuts from all airlines is a feasible and necessary step to take. Many countries already enforce peanut bans in schools to protect children—airlines should follow suit for the same reasons of safety and inclusivity. Passengers on flights are confined to tight, shared spaces for extended periods, making it crucial to eliminate potential allergens from the environment.
We urge the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and airlines around the world to implement a global ban on peanuts. This measure would not only protect individuals with peanut allergies, allowing them to fly without fear, but it would also demonstrate a commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive travel environment for everyone.
Please sign this petition to help protect those with peanut allergies and ensure safe air travel for all.
