The Issue

We, the undersigned, call upon the City Council of London to implement a ban or minimize the use of fireworks outside of traditional celebrations such as Victoria Day and Labour Day. The frequent and unwarranted use of fireworks causes considerable inconvenience and distress among residents, compromising their comfort and well-being. Several other locations in Canada, including Vancouver, Edmonton, Brampton, Halton Hills, Waterloo, Orillia, and the province of Quebec, have already taken action.

Concerns About Safety and Health:

Fireworks pose serious risks, including injuries and potential fatalities. Statistics Canada reports numerous injuries related to fireworks each year, with children and young adults being particularly vulnerable. The intense heat generated by fireworks can lead to devastating burn injuries and property damage.

Environmental Impact:

Fireworks contribute significantly to air and water pollution, harming local ecosystems and public health. The residue from fireworks can contaminate our water systems, and their noise pollution disrupts wildlife.

Mental Health Effects:

The unexpected noise from fireworks can trigger severe distress, especially for individuals with PTSD, anxiety, and autism spectrum disorders. Increased firework displays during celebrations can heighten this mental strain for many Canadians.

Impact on Frontline Workers:

Frontline workers, including healthcare professionals and emergency responders, often lose critical sleep due to the loud noises of fireworks. This lack of rest can hinder their ability to perform vital duties, ultimately impacting the care and safety of our community. It is unjust to expect these dedicated individuals to provide lifesaving services while dealing with the repercussions of disruptive fireworks.

Impact on Emergency Services:

Fireworks often lead to an increase in emergency calls related to injuries, fires, and disturbances, straining our already overburdened emergency services. First responders are diverted from critical duties to address firework-related incidents, which can delay their response to genuine emergencies. This places both the responders and the community at greater risk.

Proposed Solutions:

We urge the City Council to consider the following measures:

Ban the use of fireworks outside of designated holidays(Victoria Day and Labour Day), if not altogether.

Enforce stricter regulations on purchasing, usage, and disposal of fireworks.

Introduce mandatory safety training for firework purchasers.

Alternatively, ban the use of personal fireworks altogether.

Promote environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional fireworks.

By signing this petition, you support a safer and more peaceful community. Let’s ensure our celebrations do not come at the cost of safety, health, or environmental integrity.
