The Issue
Pune city is seeing a huge growth in the number of dahi handi/ ganpati mandals on the roads these days. While we respect and appreciate the wonderful celebration that we all do in these festivals but some mandals these days are disrespecting our Lord Ganesha by playing vulgar, cheap bollywood songs on DJ and blocking huge parts of roads.
Playing DJ and dancing inappropriately is in no way included in our sacred Hindu tradition. We Hindus believe in doing aarti, playing bhajan in soft tones, respectfully treating others during festivals. How can anyone express devotion by troubling other citizens through loud noises and creating ruckus?
There is no consideration given by them to the senior citizens, pregnant women and the patients when they need to travel to hospitals in an emergency. The road is blocked due to numerous mandals and miravnuks within the same area of the city. The noise pollution of loud speakers also harms the patients and animals. Are we really celebrating this festival for the reason why it was started?
It is our request that the PMC and Government should restrict number of pandals allowed on road and totally ban the Dj and laser lights.
PMC should arrange a dedicated area/ space for celebrations so that citizens can really get involved in devotion without troubling the vulnerable population.
We sincerely request that DJs should be fully banned without exceptions. They are doing no good to anyone. Many drunkards are seen shamelessly dancing in such miravnuk in front of our holy, respected and divine God Ganpati and also causing too much trouble to poor citizens. The same is for dahi handi in front of respected, holy Lord Shri Krishna. The strong laser lights they use also are piercing to the eyes especially to seniors and small children.
Traditional dhol tasha celebrations within limits and in a well planned way are very much appreciated but the DJ nuisance should not be tolerated. Our history and legacy of these festivals is so rich and prestigious with traditional vaadan, aartis and decency. Then why are we spoiling our rich cultural heritage?
If the mandals still want to continue such nasty celebrations, then they should book a private hall and do all this indoors. I have myself seen people in emergency not able to go to doctors because of DJ noise and uncontrolled environment and road blocks.
Requesting the authorities to take this issue seriously.
