The Issue

As a concerned member of the UK community, I am deeply troubled by the continued practice of non-stun slaughter in our country. The process of slaughtering animals without stunning them first is inherently cruel, causing unnecessary suffering to millions of animals every year. This is because, without being stunned, animals remain fully conscious as they are slaughtered, experiencing immense pain and fear. As a compassionate nation that prides itself on animal welfare, we need to align our practices with our values.

Historically, the United Kingdom has been at the forefront of promoting high standards of welfare for animals. We have made significant strides over the years, with most abattoirs adopting stunning methods as a standard practice to alleviate animal suffering. Nevertheless, current exceptions to these welfare laws allow non-stun slaughter to continue, primarily to accommodate certain religious practices. While respecting religious freedoms is crucial, alternatives that do not compromise animal welfare, such as pre-slaughter stunning, should be considered and more widely endorsed.

Scientific studies and organizations dedicated to animal welfare, such as the Humane Slaughter Association, have consistently voiced concerns regarding the avoidable suffering caused by non-stun slaughter procedures. They highlight that stunning techniques not only minimize animal distress but also improve the quality of meat products. With advancements in technology and increased awareness around animal rights, it is time for the UK government to re-evaluate existing legislation and ban non-stun slaughter.

Furthermore, the UK is predominantly a Christian nation, where teachings of kindness, compassion, and stewardship of all creation are integral values. Allowing the practice of non-stun slaughter contradicts these principles and the notion of our society being one that embodies empathy and care for all living beings.

By signing this petition, we urge the government to protect animal welfare and ensure humane practices in all slaughterhouses across the UK. Together, let us advocate for a legislative change that aligns with our moral and ethical beliefs. Let us stand united and call for an end to non-stun slaughter. Please sign this petition and join the movement to promote a kinder and more humane approach to animal welfare.
