Growing up along California’s coastline, the ocean has always been a constant presence in our lives. It has given us peace, inspiration, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of our state. From the sound of the waves to the diverse marine life that depends on clean water, the ocean is an essential part of our community. However, this fragile ecosystem is under serious threat from offshore oil drilling. Oil spills pollute our waters, destroy marine habitats, and endanger countless species, from seabirds and fish to dolphins and whales. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), marine oil spills can cause long-lasting environmental damage, killing wildlife and disrupting ecosystems for years. With every new offshore drilling lease, the risk of another devastating spill increases. We are Conner and Maddie, two high school students growing up in Ventura County, a region deeply connected to the ocean and its health. We started this petition because we believe it is our responsibility to speak up for the environment and for future generations. California has the power to protect its coastline by banning new offshore oil drilling and investing in clean, renewable energy solutions. We urge state legislators to take action and prioritize the health of our oceans, wildlife, and coastal communities.
