A recent attempt to regain community support for the fire ant eradication program has backfired, with Dr. Puckett, an entomologist from Texas, distancing himself from the program's strategy. Dr. Puckett, an expert on insecticide poisons and fire ants, was initially misinformed that toxic baits were only being used in areas infested with fire ants. However, upon discovering that the majority of the 800,000 hectares being poisoned were actually fire ant-free, he expressed shock and concern.

Dr. Puckett criticized the lack of community support for the program, stating that he does not believe in mandates and that such actions would not be tolerated in the United States without consent. He also expressed worry about the long-term effects of the program, citing the example of areas in Logan, Queensland, where millions of dollars' worth of poisons have been applied, only to see the area resemble highly infested areas in Texas.

Dr. Puckett warned that fire ants can easily spread through hay, landscape materials, and soil, and that the threat of continual spread remains. While he has not studied Australian indigenous ants, he suggested that they may hold the key to halting the mass spread of fire ants. He noted that the overuse of contact poisons in the United States, as highlighted in books like "Silent Spring," has been unsuccessful in eradicating fire ants, as native ant species were wiped out, allowing fire ants to return. Scientists are speculated that the failure to irradiate fire ants in Logan may be due to the destruction of native ant species and that introducing native meat eating ants could be a solution.
