The Issue
I live half a mile from the sea on the Sussex Coast, a stunning section of the Eastbourne Marine Protected Zone (MPZ). This area is home to rare habitats that shelter incredible marine life, such as the elusive snub-nosed seahorses, seals, and a myriad of other species. However, these precious ecosystems are under threat due to the continuous presence of motorised pleasure craft in our protected waters.
The roar of engines and the pollution from these vessels disrupt the very tranquility that should define a Marine Protected Zone. The wildlife that depends on these habitats has to navigate treacherous waters not only deterring their presence, but also impacting their health and survival. Countless scientific studies have shown that noise pollution and water contamination greatly diminish the quality of life for marine species, having cascading effects on local biodiversity.
The Sussex Coast, treasured for its natural beauty and biodiversity, deserves stringent protective measures to ensure the natural balance of our marine landscape is maintained. This can be achieved with the decisive banning of motorised pleasure craft within the Marine Protected Zones. By doing so, we would allow for cleaner waters, where life can thrive without the ever-present threat of noise and pollution.
Moreover, many countries globally have already taken steps to restrict boating activities in sensitive areas. It's time for us to follow suit as we protect not only our beautiful coastline but the future of marine life altogether. Transitioning toward sustainable tourism activities, such as kayaking and sailing, that cause minimal disturbance and are fuel-efficient, is a practical and effective alternative.
To preserve the natural wealth of our marine environment, I urge local authorities to implement legally binding measures to ban motorised pleasure crafts in the Eastbourne Marine Protected Zone. Citizens of the Sussex Coast and marine enthusiasts worldwide, unite now to call for this necessary change. Let us be a testament to proactive conservation efforts.
Please sign this petition to safeguard our delicate marine ecosystems and ensure a vibrant, flourishing habitat for our marine friends.
