Ban men from Malott dining hall on Mondays
The Issue
As a student at the Claremont Colleges, I have experienced firsthand the need for a dedicated space where women can enjoy a peaceful dining environment without the presence and disturbances of men. The Scripps College campus is a sanctuary for women, and its dining facilities should remain a testament to that principle at least one day a week.
Monday at Malott Dining Hall should be a day reserved for women. This isn’t an attempt to create division but rather an effort to provide a necessary break and a truly safe space for female students to gather, relax, and eat without interruption or discomfort. The presence of men, however well-intentioned, often leads to louder noise levels and, occasionally, behaviors that are perceived as intrusive or intimidating.
The five Claremont Colleges (5Cs) are known for respecting diversity and promoting inclusivity while honoring their individual foundations. Among these colleges, Scripps has a unique focus as a women's college, serving as a space where women can excel academically and socially. However, the current policy of allowing men in all dining areas every day negates this unique mission on a fundamental level.
Statistically, creating women's-only time in shared spaces can significantly enhance feelings of safety and inclusivity for women. Numerous studies and testimonials highlight that even just one day devoted to such exclusivity can reduce anxiety and conflict, fostering a supportive environment beneficial to all female students.
Therefore, we propose that Malott Dining Hall restrict access to women on Mondays. This small yet significant change can pave the way for more inclusive solutions while still accommodating the broader community needs on all other days. We are not suggesting large-scale exclusions but asking for just one day of peace—a reasonable request given the college's mission.
We need your support. By signing this petition, you can help us create a balanced and respectful community that acknowledges and honors its history and purpose. Let's come together to ensure that at least one day of the week, the women of Scripps can enjoy their dining facilities as they were intended.
