The Issue

This petition is directed to the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and to his cabinet. Climate change is a threat to all humanity, and to reach our Paris Agreement target of 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, WE, the students at John Abbott College, call upon the federal government and the prime minister to limit or eliminate federal government lobbying entirely by petroleum companies or companies dealing in fossil fuels. The lobbying from these companies empowers them in the eyes of the government, offering them the privilege to continue their environmentally destructive operations. The federal government, knowing that these companies destroy our environment, our climate, and therefore our future, willingly turn a blind eye by accepting money from said companies (https://www.bennettjones.com/Publications-Section/Updates/Canadian-Oil-Gas-Company-Fined-$9,-d-,5-million-for-Bribery-of-Foreign-Official  For the government to regain their power over these companies, it must first stop dealing with these companies, so that it may enact substantial change in the fight against climate change.
