The Issue
On March 21st, 2026, my life changed forever. My beloved daughter, Violet Harris, was tragically killed while riding a Lime scooter. Her young life was cut short due to a preventable accident involving a scooter that she accessed through another child’s parent’s account. Every day, I live with the profound grief of knowing that I will never get my baby back. It is a heartbreak that no parent should ever have to endure.
Lime scooters, while convenient for many adults, pose significant dangers to our children. They are not toys. Each year, thousands of children are injured while riding these scooters, and some, like my precious Violet, face fatal consequences. Studies indicate that minors lack the necessary judgment, motor skills, and experience to manage the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle like a Lime scooter in urban environments. Reports from the National Institutes of Health, for instance, highlight a marked increase in electric scooter-related injuries over the past few years, with children being disproportionately affected.
Despite these alarming statistics, Lime scooters remain accessible to those under 18, often through the accounts of well-meaning but unaware adults. This has to stop. Our community must come together to impose restrictions that prevent minors from gaining unsupervised access to these dangerous devices. We must enforce stricter age verification protocols to protect our young ones from harm.
I propose that Lime and similar scooter-sharing services implement robust identity checks to verify age before rental, including potential technology such as facial recognition or ID scanning. Additionally, an educational campaign targeting parents could help raise awareness of the risks and responsibilities associated with lending accounts to minors.
By taking these concrete steps, we can prevent other families from suffering the same devastating loss that ours has faced. Join me in urging lawmakers and Lime, the leaders in micro-mobility, to enforce and improve these necessary restrictions to safeguard our children from harm.
Please sign this petition to support our call for a safer community, and to prevent another tragic incident like the one that took my Violet. Together, let's protect the future of our children.
