The Issue

In Vancouver, Washington, I discovered a product at my local shop that was being marketed as a simple herbal supplement. Kratom was suggested to me as a means to assist with sleep and anxiety, described as a natural solution without the risk of dependence. The store even offered free samples, and the dosage advice given was vague and often encouraged excessive use. Little did I know, this would spiral into a devastating situation.

The danger in the method of sale is profound. Sold in unmarked buckets, with only a simple note written in sharpie by an employee to differentiate the strains, there was no genuine oversight or information provided to the consumer. In five short months, what was supposed to be a harmless supplement had led me to almost losing my life.

I found myself in a severe state of addiction, lost almost everything I valued, and required extensive emergency attention, detox, and treatment. I would not wish this nightmare on anyone else. What is especially heinous about this market, is the intentional targeting of people in recovery that are susceptible to addiction, and are “ highly dependable customers” making a lot of greedy business owners a lot of money.  Greed is at it’s core.  People who have fought like hell to escape addiction, are committed to their sobriety are being fed misinformation that tricks them back into addiction and it is devastating. We deserve better, and more importantly, SO DO OUR CHILDREN. Just like alcohol, although there are age regulations, gaining access is surprisingly easy.

The time has come to make a significant change for our community's safety. I am urging the city of Vancouver, Washington, to ban the sales of Kratom completely and create comprehensive resources for those who wish to quit. This includes providing support specifically for individuals who are forced to stop suddenly if such a law is enacted.

Despite claims of supposed benefits, the reality of Kratom's potential for abuse and the lack of informed guidance available at point of sale is a concern that must be addressed. We need solutions that prioritize health, safety, and education to prevent others from enduring similar hardship.
