I am writing this petition from a deeply personal place. I recently assisted Ontario rabbit rescues in saving 12 innocent rabbits that were on the brink of being euthanized on December 10 if they didn’t find a foster home. This experience opened my eyes to the urgent need for change in our country's animal protection laws.

Currently, kill shelters are legal and prevalent across Canada, leading to the unnecessary loss of countless animal lives each year. It is high time we put an end to this practice and implement better federal legislation for animals.

Furthermore, it is crucial that we update the Criminal Code of Canada regarding animal cruelty. As per World Animal Protection's 2020 report, Canada ranks far behind other developed nations when it comes to animal welfare laws.

We need stronger penalties for those who harm animals and stricter regulations for shelters and pet owners alike. By doing so, we can ensure that no more innocent lives like those 12 rabbits will be threatened due to lack of care or resources.

Let us stand together as a nation committed to compassion and justice for all beings.
