Petition for A New UN Environmental Summit

Petition for A New UN Environmental Summit

The Issue

The goal of this Petition is to bring the United Nations to another Environmental Summit. This has been done many times in the past, but not all countries have ratified the agreements reached at these summits. The prime example of this is how one of the largest countries, the United States has avoided joining global environmental agreements by not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, and their withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change Mitigation. This is the main goal of this petition is to fix issues such as large countries like the U.S. not ratifying global environmental agreements. This is why it is necessary to have another summit, and reach another agreement at the summit, that the United States, or any other previously non-compliant country could not refuse to ratify. The government of the United States and many other world governments still have representatives that disagree with or ignore global warming and pollution as issues, and refuse to take action to help the environment because it will hurt the economy. Another prime example of this was directly stated by the current President of the United States when he withdrew from the Paris Agreement saying that they need to renegotiate to create a "fair" deal, one that would most likely focus on monetary versus environmental factors. This is why a new summit is necessary. The governments of the U.S. and many other countries historically have not listened and followed advice on taking measures to help the environment, and continually do not make the necessary changes needed to help diminish the damage we are still causing to this planet. Thus, it is now in our hands, it is up to all of us across the world to push for change in all countries, not just our own. The United States, and many other countries cannot be changed from inside the country because people with money and authority in those countries do not want the economic repercussions of environmental regulation. Though there would be repercussions, if we stand together as one, as people of this earth, we will all be held to the same standard, and will take a large step in aiding our environmental problems. We cannot achieve progress in lessening our impact on the environment if there are countries that are not on board with following and ratifying global environmental agreements. Thus, as a unified people of our planet, we have the ability through petitions such as this one, to push for the UN and world governments to embrace the truth that changes in how we treat the environment need to be made if we want the human race to live on this planet longer than another 100 years. It is not about us. It is about preserving the earth for those who come after us. This petition is important because it is increasingly necessary to have a new Environmental Summit as we have entered a new decade where we are still polluting our planet, and some countries remain unchecked in their production of pollutants, and overuse of resources. No matter what country you live in, and regardless of how well your country takes care of the environment, this is a necessary step, and it is as simple as signing this petition. If enough people from across the world sign this petition, the UN, and hopefully the U.S. and other non-compliant countries will have no choice but to listen, and make changes. Thank you for your time, and please pass this petition along.
