The issue

As your local State MP, I have received countless complaints from locals, as well as witnessing myself the reckless behavior of jet ski (personal watercraft) riders, who continually flout regulations, disrupt the peace, and threaten the safety and environment of our cherished coastal area. It's disheartening to see the natural beauty and tranquility of our bay compromised by the noise and potential hazards jet skis present.

Port Phillip Bay is not just a recreational area; it's a thriving ecosystem home to numerous marine species and a beloved spot for families, swimmers, and nature enthusiasts. The constant presence and careless activity of jet skis pose significant risks, such as marine life disturbances, water pollution, and potential accidents involving swimmers and other watercraft.

According to the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, several endangered species, including the Burrunan dolphin and Australian fur seal, inhabit these waters. Excessive noise and pollution from jet skis disrupt their natural habitats, posing a considerable threat to their well-being and survival. Moreover, statistics from the Transport Safety Victoria highlight a significant increase in waterway incidents involving jet skis, underscoring the need for stricter control in areas frequented by families and conservationists.

I believe that creating a 1 km exclusion zone for jet skis around Port Phillip Bay could be a reasonable solution. It will help preserve the ecological balance and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone who values this beautiful coastline.

Join me in advocating for this crucial change by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and preserve the integrity of Port Phillip Bay for years to come.
