The Issue

Four years ago, my journey with Sterling public schools began, but little did I know that a software program called IXL would become a significant source of frustration. As a concerned parent who cares deeply about our children's education, I have observed the detrimental impact that IXL has had on both students and educators in our community. I've seen first-hand how this program, which is intended to support learning, often does more harm than good.

IXL aims to provide personalized learning and practice experiences for students, but in reality, many students find it excessively stressful and even discouraging. The program's penalty for wrong answers and the repetitive nature of its exercises can lead to a loss of confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Numerous children find themselves spending hours trying to improve their "SmartScore," only to end up feeling defeated and anxious.

Moreover, educators in Sterling have expressed their concerns over the rigidity of IXL's curriculum, which often undermines their efforts to employ more dynamic and effective teaching methods. Teachers should have the freedom to tailor their lessons to the needs of their students without being bound to a system that pushes rote memorization over critical thinking and creativity.

Research shows that excessive screen time can negatively impact children’s cognitive development, yet IXL encourages a digital-first approach that keeps children glued to screens. This shift from traditional learning methods raises significant concerns about the long-term effects on students' attention spans and overall well-being.

We must also consider the financial implications. Sterling public schools allocate a considerable portion of their budget to maintaining subscriptions for programs like IXL, funds which could be redirected towards resources that better support holistic education. These funds could be used for hiring additional staff, providing supplemental materials, and investing in extracurricular programs that enrich students' learning experiences and foster various skills.

It's crucial that we put our children's mental health, academic success, and happiness at the forefront of any educational decisions made by Sterling public schools. We need to be proactive about creating an environment where education inspires rather than inhibits.

Let's come together to urge Sterling public schools to discontinue using IXL and instead adopt more flexible, engaging, and supportive educational tools. By signing this petition, you can help us advocate for a learning system that truly prioritizes the needs of our students and empowers educators to teach effectively. Join me in championing a better future for our children’s education.
