Ban illegal shisha bars across the UK
The Issue
In 2007, when indoor smoking was banned across the UK, I watched countless pensioners withdraw from their social gatherings at local pubs. My heart sank as I saw retirees confined to their homes, missing out on cherished connections, simply because the places once filled with laughter and camaraderie were stripped of the option to enjoy a cigarette while sharing a drink with old friends.
Yet, as the years pass, shisha bars have risen in droves, flagrantly disobeying the law regarding indoor smoking regulations. Shisha, or hookah smoking, might have its cultural significance, but allowing these establishments to operate legally undermines the very essence of a unified legal system where one set of laws applies to all, equally.
Immigrants have converted old pubs into shisha lounges where communal smoking is permitted, while our pensioners—who deserve a space to socialise and reminisce—are sidelined, all in the name of inclusion. I am in no way against cultural practices sharing space in the UK, but should it come at the cost of breaking a law that affects the very heart of social life for many locals?
According to the Department of Health, tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK, and smoking bans are in place to protect public health. Yet these illegal shisha bars seem to bypass enforcement, raising important questions about fairness and accountability.
By removing the legal blind eyes turned towards these establishments, we can reclaim spaces for all citizens of the UK, ensuring that no particular group feels unjustly treated.
We urge local councils and the government to step up inspections and enforce existing legislation rigorously, holding all establishments to the same standards, regardless of their cultural niche. It's not about preference or discrimination; it's about fairness, public health, and the integrity of our laws.
