Stop Illegal Fireworks in New Mexico

Stop Illegal Fireworks in New Mexico
The Issue
The joyous evenings meant to celebrate with fireworks have become nights of distress and anxiety in our neighborhood. Our communities in New Mexico, rich with culture and diversity, finds itself under siege from the unintended consequences of illegal firework displays. We've witnessed friends and family members, not to mention their beloved pets, being adversely affected.
Illegal fireworks not only pose a risk to safety but also threaten the well-being and peace of countless families. These unauthorized celebrations often result in severe injuries, ranging from burns and hearing damage to life-threatening situations requiring emergency medical attention. Even more alarming is the toll on veterans and trauma survivors, for whom the loud explosions can trigger PTSD episodes and severe panic attacks.
Pets are particularly vulnerable, with countless reports of animals fleeing their homes out of fear, ending up lost, injured, or worse. Our community should not live in fear of celebratory sounds turning into hazards.
There are dangerous consequences when illegal fireworks are used in our populous cities. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks start an average of 19,500 fires each year, including 1,900 structure fires and 500 vehicle fires, causing an average of five deaths and $105 million in direct property damage. These statistics are terrifyingly too close to home.
Some believe "It won't happen here," which is a misguided belief founded on the fact that "It hasn't happened here.....yet" No family deserves to anxiously wait until illegal fireworks take precious lives or destroy valuable homes and businesses.
Therefore, we urge lawmakers and officials in the State of New Mexico to take immediate action. Implementing a complete ban on illegal fireworks, which will ensure our neighborhoods are places of celebration and safety. Strengthening enforcement measures, increasing fines for violations, and raising public awareness about the impacts of illegal fireworks can deter misuse and promote safer alternatives for celebrations.
Sign this petition to protect our communities, preserve the safety and sanctity of our neighborhoods, and ensure a peaceful living environment for everyone. Your support is essential in making a change towards a safer New Mexico.
