Ban i-Ready English and Math from Bellevue School District

Ban i-Ready English and Math from Bellevue School District
The Issue
The Bellevue School District (BSD) recently implemented the i-Ready program for English and Math in our children's curriculum, promising an innovative way to track student progress and personalize learning. However, significant concerns from educators and parents have emerged, casting doubt on its efficacy and suitability for our students.
Firstly, research indicates that programs like i-Ready may not comprehensively address individual student needs. A 2019 study by the National Education Policy Center highlighted that standardized educational software often fails to consider the diverse learning styles and paces of students. It’s critical that our children's unique educational journeys aren’t reduced to impersonal algorithms and assessments that don’t accurately reflect their capabilities.
Moreover, the i-Ready program is known to cause significant stress and anxiety among students. Many parents report that their children feel overwhelmed and disengaged due to excessive screen time and the repetitive nature of the tasks. A survey conducted by the Washington State Parent Teacher Association in 2020 showed that more than half of the parents agreed that i-Ready was not helpful in enhancing their child’s learning experience. It’s crucial that BSD fosters an environment conducive to positive learning experiences, not one that adds unnecessary stress to our children’s lives.
Importantly, funds allocated for i-Ready might be more effectively spent on hiring additional teachers or investing in smaller class sizes, where personalized attention could significantly uplift student performance. A 2021 report by the American Educational Research Association emphasized the importance of teacher-student interactions in improving educational outcomes, suggesting that students perform better with direct guidance from teachers rather than relying solely on digital platforms.
We urge the Bellevue School District to recognize these concerns and prioritize the best interests of our students. By banning i-Ready for English and Math, we can redirect efforts and resources to more effective educational methods that truly support our children's learning.
Please sign this petition to urge the Bellevue School District to remove i-Ready from their curriculum and implement more effective, personalized educational strategies. Let’s ensure that our children’s education is in the hands of passionate educators, not just computer algorithms.
