While AI data centres have become crucial for technological advancement, their environmental footprint cannot be ignored. Hyperscale AI data centres require extremely high electricity loads - current Scottish proposals already total around 6000MW, more than double Scotland’s winter peak demand. This level of consumption would strain the national grid, raise costs for households and businesses, and undermine Scotland’s legally binding net‑zero targets.

These centres also use millions of litres of water per day for cooling, placing pressure on local supplies and ecosystems. Communities near such facilities often face increased noise, degraded air quality, higher energy bills, landscape disruption, and competition for water resources.

Scotland is known for its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and building hyperscale AI data centres contradicts our environmental goals and sustainable living practices. The focus should be directed towards green technologies and innovations that align with its ecological values, rather than giving way to developments that heighten energy consumption and ecological disruption.

We must call upon our policymakers to halt the construction of AI data centres in Scotland and prioritize greener alternatives that are in harmony with our environmental objectives. Let us advocate for sustainable solutions that foster economic growth without compromising our cherished landscapes.
