The horse slaughter industry is a danger to society. While the industry thinks they are making money for the country, they are losing money for Canada in other ways. The act of horse slaughter is not sustainable for Canada to continue with anymore, it is lowering property value and affecting our economy, these facilities pollute the environment, and promote unsafe livestock transport and slaughter. 

A horses care is not considered when they are intended for slaughter. Horses come to slaughterhouses in all conditions Young, Old, Sick, Injured, and Diseased. Some come in perfect condition, to be someone’s companion once again, but never get the chance. Horses that come to the slaughterhouse with a disease are likely to pass on their illness to the other horses. Other mares are sometimes pregnant when slaughtered. The point is there is no proper background check to see the horse’s condition when they go to slaughterhouses. No matter how sick, injured, or pregnant a horse is they are denied access to veterinary care, this is because of the mindset that if a horse is intended to be slaughtered, why waste resources and money on something that is going to die anyways?

Not all horses are slaughtered in Canada some are transported to locations live. This is an incredibly stressful endeavor for the equines. Traveling horses meant for slaughter are packed usually four into a crate, they are not given food, water, or space to lay down throughout the flight/flights. Legally horses are not allowed to fly longer than 28 hours, but it is common for these flights to exceed that, and no one is reprimanded for it. On the other hand, when they are at the place of slaughter, they are plumped up with food to become a better cut of meat.

Canada is the biggest and only distributor of horse meat in North America. Slaughterhouses only give a certain number of jobs that are not desirable and are dangerous. By working here, you contribute to the lowering of property value and the pollution of the grounds. Most slaughterhouses are overstaying their welcome because let’s face it, no one wants to build a business next to one of these facilities, this results in a waste of space. The area around the facilities is inhospitable because the air smells, the land is gross, and the sounds are terrifying. Not to mention the dangers of living close to these places. The money that is put into horse slaughter is being wasted.

We need to stop looking at horse slaughter as not a big deal because clearly, it is causing more bad than good. Taxpayers should not be happy to hear a portion of their money is going to support horse slaughterhouses when they need renovations and resources. What once was a grand money operation has now turned into a dreadful plea for acceptance among people, and to convince us that what they are doing is helping Canada, when in reality they will go against the law to rob horses of their lives that they deserve.
