Ban horse racing in New Zealand

Ban horse racing in New Zealand

The issue

In this million-dollar industry, horses are forced through abuse and cruel acts to perform even while suffering pain. horses are injected with substances to mask the pain of the horse and allow better performance while in training. most racehorses start at the age of 2 years old where their bones are not fully developed, this makes them prone to injuries before they even start their racing journey. Horses are neglected for their needs and pushed past their limits, with these young horses, many of their long lives are cut short. With horses being able to live through to 30 years old horses involved in the horse racing industry only live to 2-5 years old. Many of these horses are abused and neglected and pushed to exhaustion where they are more prone to fatal injuries. This goes against the animal cruelty act as “The act contains a provision to prevent ill-treatment and inadequate care of animals. It also regulates the use of traps and devices that have the potential to cause pain or distress to animals”. Horse racing should be treated as a crime and be abolished as these animals are neglected and abused daily and their efforts can be fatal, bones breaking and severed hooves due to them being pushed past their limits. Thousands of horses die every year on the racetrack due to the amount of pressure the industry is forcing them to perform. This is why horse racing should be abolished in New Zealand.
