Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in NYC – End Animal Cruelty on Our Streets
The Issue
Every day, horse-drawn carriages continue to operate on the busy, dangerous streets of New York City — a practice that is outdated, INHUMANE and UNSAFE
When not working, these animals are confined to deplorable stables in Hell’s Kitchen, in conditions far removed from the natural environment horses require to thrive. Concrete floors, lack of turnout, and minimal space for movement highlight the stark contrast between this existence and humane animal care.
We, the undersigned, call on the New York City Council and Mayor Eric Adams to pass legislation that will ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC once and for all.!!
These horses are forced to work long hours in extreme weather conditions — from scorching summer heat to freezing winter storms. They are made to pull heavy loads through congested traffic, surrounded by loud noises, honking horns, and unpredictable pedestrians and vehicles. This environment is not safe for horses or the people around them.
There have been numerous documented incidents of horses collapsing, becoming injured, or even dying as recent as this past week lol I’m on NYC streets. These are not isolated cases — they are symptoms of a broken and cruel system that puts profit over animal welfare.
This is not a romantic tradition — it is animal exploitation in plain sight.
Other cities around the world, including Chicago and Barcelona, have taken steps to remove horse-drawn carriages from their streets. NYC can and should be a leader in compassion and innovation. We can embrace modern, electric carriagesthat preserve the tourism experience without harming animals.
We demand:
An immediate legislative ban on horse-drawn carriages in New York City
A humane retirement and rehoming plan for the horses currently in service
The implementation of modern, cruelty-free alternatives
New York City is a place of progress, not cruelty. Let's take a stand for what's right.
