Why this petition matters

Started by Meda Breje

Having recently travelled to Morocco, I couldn’t help but to notice and become deeply affected by all the animal cruelty I observed throughout the country. I made my way from Casablanca all around until I reached Marrakesh where at one point burst into tears upon seeing all the emaciated, bruised and injured horses pulling carriages throughout the city centre the entire day from morning until into the late hours of the night. There was not one horse that looked healthy or even remotely close to a decent weight. All had multiple harness scars, open wounds and had every single one of their ribs showing. They were made to trot around on the slippery pavement pulling heavy laden carriages of mostly tourists from different places in Morocco. The horse owners and drivers all had whips and would use them freely on the horses, with no understanding of how harsh they are on bare skin. There was not one horse that I could see being left to rest, being given water or even being fed a bare minimum amount of food. Needless to say, all these horses are eventually driven back to outside of town, not close to the city centre by any means, fed a small amount to keep them barely alive and then brought back in the morning to do it all over again. These animals do not deserve this life of abuse and endless work. Hopefully we can raise awareness and if not eradicate this “attraction” completely then at least let tourists understand that it is not okay to partake in carriage rides OR educate owners on proper care of a horse. There are clearly no regulations and no regard for the welfare of these horses. Let’s do something about it.
