The Issue

I'm writing this petition because I believe it's time for a change in how education is approached in Ohio. I've experienced firsthand the pressure that comes with having to attend school for six hours a day, five days a week, and then being expected to continue with homework once I get home. It's overwhelming and exhausting.

For many students, homework feels like an extension of school that infringes on personal time. Instead of using after-school hours to rest, relax, or engage in hobbies and activities that help develop other important skills, we're trapped under the weight of assignments and projects due the next day. This isn't just about feeling tired; it's about mental health and the quality of education.

According to a study by the National Education Association, too much homework can actually diminish its effectiveness and lead to stress and burnout. Numerous articles and reports indicate that excessive homework can lead to negative impacts on students’ well-being and family time, leading to increased stress levels and reduced engagement in educational activities.

In Finland, where students consistently rank among the top in global education rankings, the emphasis is placed more on interactive learning and less on homework. This approach allows students to enjoy learning and develop a genuine interest in their education without feeling overwhelmed by endless assignments.

By eliminating homework, schools would empower students to learn in ways that suit their individual styles. Implementing this change could lead to a more balanced, effective, and enjoyable learning experience for students across the state. I urge the Ohio Department of Education to reconsider their stance on homework and allow us the chance to explore and grow beyond the classroom.

Please sign this petition to support the elimination of homework in Ohio schools. Let's bring back the joy of learning without the burden of after-school assignments.
