As someone deeply concerned about the welfare of our environment and wildlife, I am starting this petition to advocate for the prohibition of releasing helium-filled balloons into the air, both in memoriam and at social gatherings. This issue is personal to me because I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact these seemingly innocent balloons can have on our precious animals.

 I have seen how released balloons often end up littering these natural habitats. It breaks my heart to think that these vibrant landscapes, which should be teeming with life, are being contaminated by discarded balloon remnants. The consequences of this seemingly harmless act are far-reaching and pose a serious threat to our wildlife & livestock. 

Balloons that descend from the sky often find their way into fields where livestock graze or wooded areas inhabited by wild animals. Unfortunately, many animals mistake these colorful objects for food or become entangled in their strings. The ingestion of balloon fragments can lead to choking, internal blockages, or digestive system injuries for animals who mistakenly consume them. These incidents result in immense suffering and even death for countless innocent creatures.

According to studies conducted by reputable organizations such as the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and various animal welfare groups across different countries, including Australia's RSPCA and America's Audubon Society, helium balloon releases contribute significantly to environmental pollution and harm wildlife populations worldwide.

The MCS estimates that over 100 million marine mammals die each year due to plastic pollution alone—a category under which helium balloons fall. Additionally, research conducted by Australia's RSPCA reveals that marine turtles are particularly vulnerable as they mistake deflated balloons for jellyfish—an essential part of their diet—leading them towards a tragic fate.

It is crucial now more than ever that we take responsibility for our actions and make conscious choices that protect rather than harm our environment. By banning the release of helium-filled balloons, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and preserve the delicate balance of ecosystems that support countless species.

I urge lawmakers and relevant authorities to consider the devastating consequences of balloon releases on wildlife and take immediate action to make it illegal. Let us prioritise the well-being of our environment, animals, and future generations by putting an end to this harmful practice once and for all.
