According to a 2018 report by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, over 800,000 animals were subject to halal slaughter methods annually. This translates into a significant number of animals experiencing unnecessary suffering.

Evidence from studies conducted by the Farm Animal Welfare Council suggests that non-stunned halal slaughter causes substantial distress and pain. In modern society, where technological advancements have provided us with humane alternatives, such practices appear to be regressive and contrary to our widely embraced animal welfare standards.

By focusing on religious practices, I respect the cultural significance of halal. However, it is crucial to examine whether this tradition can coexist with humane slaughtering processes that ensure minimal suffering. Several European countries, including Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, have already taken the humane step of banning non-stunned slaughter. Canada, known for its progressive stance on animal rights, should follow suit by prioritizing animal welfare over outdated practices.

We have the potential to set a precedent for animal rights, a movement that champions both cultural respect and ethical practices. I urge the government to introduce legislation that bans halal slaughter methods unless animals are stunned before being slaughtered. This change is not about conflicting with any religious beliefs but about aligning with a broader ethical responsibility of ensuring kindness towards all living creatures.
