Ban Halal Meat in the UK

The Issue

Having grown up with an unwavering belief that animals should be treated with dignity and respect, I find the methods used in halal slaughter to be in deep conflict with my values. I believe that for an animal to be dispatched, certain humane guidelines should be strictly followed to ensure the least amount of suffering possible.

In the UK, there are standards set to ensure slaughter practices are as humane as possible. However, halal meat, prepared through a specific Islamic ritual, often involves the animal being fully conscious when its throat is cut. This practice raises significant concerns about animal welfare, adding unnecessary suffering that contradicts the welfare standards many of us hold dear.

Statistics support this concern: according to a report by the Humane Slaughter Association, animals slaughtered without pre-stunning experience greater pain and stress compared to those who are stunned. In many European countries, such as Sweden and Denmark, ritual slaughter methods that do not include pre-stunning are already banned to better align with animal welfare standards.

We propose a legislative change in the UK to ban the slaughter of animals without pre-stunning, effectively prohibiting the traditional method of halal slaughter. This would not prevent halal meat consumption, as many Muslim scholars agree that pre-stunning is permissible under Islamic law if it does not cause harm to the animal and allows for a humane death.

As compassionate citizens, it is our responsibility to act for the voiceless animals and ensure their end of life is as painless as possible. We urge the UK government to align with other progressive nations by enforcing these critical standards. Join us in advocating for a more humane approach to animal welfare by signing this petition.
