REQUEST

That the House of Representatives passes legislation in order for all commercial Grey Hound Racing in New Zealand to be banned.

ABOUT

Greyhound racing is an organised sport where dogs of the Greyhound breed are competitively raced around a track. Seven countries in the world have a commercial Greyhound racing industry, New Zealand being the fourth largest worldwide with six operational racing tracks.

The sport is deemed cruel and inhumane by many animal welfare associations, and we agree. The 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons alone resulted in the injury of 1,737 greyhounds and death of 160 others in New Zealand.

The Greyhounds that are used for racing repeatedly get injured, yet the sport has not been made illegal. For many dogs, the races are distressing and due to their living conditions being inadequate alongside their poor nutrition, recovery and rehabilitation chances are slim.

Greyhound Racing in New Zealand poses severe risks to the welfare of these animals, yet remains legalised. It is our mission to change this, and ban the commercial racing of greyhounds in New Zealand for the good of the animals and our nation.

WHY NOW?

It is especially important to sign this petition currently as governmental efforts to ban Commercial Greyhound Racing in New Zealand have subsided. With an upcoming election, this policy change has been placed on the backburner. Therefore, it is our responsibility to make a change!
